Kick-starting your career, whether you are starting off as a young person or looking to try something new, can be a big challenge. Apprenticeships are a fantastic way to learn on the job and earn money while you train.

This week is National Apprenticeships Week, which celebrates the impact of apprenticeships on individuals, employers and the economy.

We have supported 10 Southwark residents into apprenticeships over the last 12 months, as part of the Aylesbury Estate regeneration, and as we look forward to the start of construction, there will be many more opportunities available.

The roles will be across a wide range of sectors, including construction, with all apprentices employed by Notting Hill Genesis and our supply chain being paid the London Living Wage.

One trainee to benefit is Steven Douglas, 34, who is a plumbing apprentice. He has been working on Manor Place Depot in Southwark.

Speaking about his experience, he said: “I applied for the role as I wanted to complete my plumbing diploma and this role was perfect to help me gain the experience I needed.

“It has taught me everything I need to know from start to finish, including testing the work I’ve done to ensure it’s been completed to a high standard. I’m looking forward to getting as much experience as possible before going on to obtain my level 3 diploma.

“I’d definitely tell anyone else thinking about applying for an apprenticeship to go for it.”

Meghan Doyle, head of community investment for Notting Hill Genesis, added: “Apprenticeships are a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills and set you up for your future career, all while earning a decent wage. We are particularly proud that all of our apprentices are paid a London Living Wage ensuring a decent standard of living, while being supported to complete an industry qualification.

“We are committed to providing 1,400 employment and training opportunities over the lifetime of the Aylesbury regeneration and apprenticeships are an important part of that. It’s great to see young people like Steven making real headway in their career and we are pleased to be playing our part.”
